For The New York Times Snow Fall project we employed a new format for publishing long form stories that attempts to seamlessly combine the written story with multimedia elements. This project has been honored with numerous awards including Gold at Malofiej 21, a Webby, a Peabody, and a Pulitzer.

Here, some of the elements I worked on . . .

An animated simulation of the avalanche, based on data from the Swiss Institute:
Visit my tumblr for some background on how this was created

A print graphic detailing the paths taken by each skier before the avalanche was triggered:<img src="http://payload118.cargocollective.com/1/3/110050/4665786/PrintPathsAvie_900.jpg" width="900" height="3173" width_o="900" height_o="3173" src_o="http://payload118.cargocollective.com/1/3/110050/4665786/PrintPathsAvie_o.jpg" data-mid="24855569" border="0" align="left"/>

In digital, the paths animate along with the story:
<img src="http://payload118.cargocollective.com/1/3/110050/4665786/PathsWeb_900.png" width="900" height="746" width_o="900" height_o="746" src_o="http://payload118.cargocollective.com/1/3/110050/4665786/PathsWeb_o.png" data-mid="24855633" border="0" align="left"/>

In this motion graphic, we use motion capture of Nick McCrory’s platform dive, captured by the team at Manhattan MoCap, to analyze the hive dive, and highlight the differences between what the judges see, and what the diver is actually doing to create the perfect impression. View the feature on nyt.com with additional features.

For the NYT R&D team, I created a model of the volume Nick carves through space, resulting in this abstract particle flow which we then 3D printed. In the resulting shape, we can clearly see each of his three rotations, as well as where he separated his arms before entering the water.<img src="http://payload80.cargocollective.com/1/3/110050/3919860/DiveFlow_cargo_900.png" width="900" height="1281" width_o="1280" height_o="1822" src_o="http://payload80.cargocollective.com/1/3/110050/3919860/DiveFlow_cargo_o.png" data-mid="22647351" border="0" align="left"/>

Thanks to NYT R&D and Shapeways, here is the 3D print:
<img src="http://payload80.cargocollective.com/1/3/110050/3919860/3D_Dive_Print_900.jpg" width="900" height="1200" width_o="900" height_o="1200" src_o="http://payload80.cargocollective.com/1/3/110050/3919860/3D_Dive_Print_o.jpg" data-mid="27309539" border="0" align="left"/>
