<description>According to the BU Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy, "Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) is a progressive degenerative disease of the brain found in athletes (and others) with a history of repetitive brain trauma, including symptomatic concussions as well as asymptomatic subconcussive hits to the head."
This video graphic, part of a larger New York Times investigative series about hockey enforcers and the death of Derek Boogaard, explains how the destruction happens inside the brain. The series received an Award of Excellence from SND33 Best of Digital Design and was a Pulitzer prize finalist.
